Yuk Fun

Tell us about yourself and a fun fact:

We are Lucy Cheung and Patrick Gildersleeves and together we are Yuk Fun. We’ve been making and designing fun illustrated stuff since 2014! We’re based in Portslade-by-Sea, just to the west of Brighton and Hove. We have a webshop where we sell screen printed clothing like T-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets and trousers, enamel pins, art prints and more!

Ooh fun fact… Patrick: I’m one belt away from being a black belt in Taekwon-do! Lucy: I’ve got three pet moss balls (it’s hard to think of ‘fun facts’ lol)

What made you get into the world of artwork and creativity?

Lucy: Everybody is really encouraged to be creative when they’re kids and it seems like to me that people get discouraged as they get older and the need to be “good” at it to continue. I just carried on making things because I like it!
Patrick: I think I may have gotten into the world of creativity because my drawings seemed to impress my friends at school!

Where do you get your inspiration from when creating new artwork?

We are both big fans of children’s book illustrators like Richard Scarry, Mary Blair, Art Seiden and Hervé Morvan. We also love all sorts of animations (Studio Ghibli ones are a fave) as well as lots of contemporary illustrators (there are too many to mention!). We also have lots of books about crafts from around the world that are great to flick through for inspiration.

What has been your favourite project to work on?

Lucy: Oooh it’s tough to choose! I love making the extra things like props for photoshoots. We made a couple of wearable giant cat heads  recently which was super fun.
Patrick: I really enjoyed working on our Screen Printing at Home book. It’s a little illustrated guide to how we print on the clothing we sell on our webshop. Lucy had to persuade me that it was a good idea but I’m so happy with the way it turned out and people seem to love it. It was a lot of fun making all of the illustrations and drawing us as cute screen printing animals!
