Becky Hodgson

Tell us about yourself and a fun fact

My name is Becky Hodgson, I’m a designer living in Yorkshire, but I’m originally from Middlesbrough, up in the north east. I am a greetings card designer by day, creator of cute and silly illustrations by night, and owner of a small etsy shop. A couple of fun facts about me are: I have a cat called Hamish who has thumbs, I can ride a unicycle and Iove coffee but hate tea!

What made you get into the world of artwork and creativity?

I have always been drawn towards being creative from a young age, and I think the reason I ended up doing it for a career is that it is what I felt I excelled at and enjoyed the most.

Where do you get your inspiration from when creating new artwork?

There is just so much to get inspiration from, however I do absolutely love looking at childrens books, as I love the variations in artists styles and the formats of them. I also find interior trends a great source of inspiration for colour. When it comes to doing characters, I just like to think of a bit of a narrative for them to get an idea – is it a cool cat that enjoys skateboarding, or a dino that is floating through space? and that usually gets the brain juices flowing!

What has been your favourite project to work on?

A project that I have loved doing was one that I set myself last year, to create an illustrated cat calendar for 2021. I really wanted to raise a bit of money to donate to a small cat charity in my local area (Pink paws Cat rescue) that is volunteer run (and it’s also where I adopted Hamish from) Half of the profits from the calendars were donated and in the end the calendars raised £225. It was the best of both – creating something that I loved and helping out a charity too.
